A Closer Look at Fire Extinguisher Testing

Fire extinguishers are critical for ensuring safety in various environments, acting as the first line of defense against fires of limited size. Here at Fire Security Services, we offer comprehensive fire extinguisher testing, inspections, and maintenance services, essential for both saving lives and preventing property damage. This article delves into what's involved in fire extinguisher testing and the importance of maintaining these life-saving devices.

The Importance of Fire Extinguisher Testing

Lack of maintenance can result in fire extinguishers failing when they are most needed, or rupturing when pressurised. Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial for their reliability. Fire extinguishers should be easily accessible and fully operational for immediate use. This is where FSS's comprehensive fire extinguisher program comes into play, designed to meet specific customer requirements.

Services Offered by Fire Security Services

FSS's program emphasises both annual maintenance and monthly inspections of portable fire extinguishers. While many businesses opt to have their employees trained by FSS for monthly checks, FSS provides the essential annual maintenance and testing. Our preventative maintenance program ensures compliance and readiness for any emergencies.

Basic Service

According to NZS4503:2005, all types of fire extinguishers require a basic testing and inspection annually. This ensures they are in operational condition and ready to use in emergencies.

Extended Service

For Wet Chemical & Foam Type Fire Extinguishers, a more thorough 3-yearly service is required. This includes a detailed examination and a test discharge, followed by recharging if the extinguisher is found satisfactory.

5-yearly Pressure Testing

Considering the pressure vessel safety legislation, all Fire Extinguishers must undergo a hydraulic pressure test and be date stamped or labelled every five years.

Ensuring Compliance and Safety

To maintain the required level of fire equipment maintenance, and to ensure the correct type of fire protection is used, FSS employs staff trained and certified with the National Certificate in Hand Held Fire Equipment (level 3).

Different Types of Fire Extinguishers

Understanding the various types of fire extinguishers is crucial, as no single type is suited for all classes of fire. The selection depends on the risks present in the area to be protected. FSS offers a range of extinguishers:

• Dry Powder Extinguishers (white band)

• Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers (black band)

• Water Extinguishers (no band)

• Foam Extinguishers (blue colour band)

• Wet Chemical Extinguishers (oatmeal colour band)

• Each type is designed for specific classes of fires, emphasizing the importance of appropriate selection and placement.
